Latest Developments in Energy Production Forecasts
With more historic data available, what have we learned and how are we accounting for our findings in future energy forecasts?  What other areas are we expanding and improving on methods? This session will explore some of the key findings from 2017 back cast studies and will also provide insights into new developments for energy assessment, including time series energy capture and the interaction between turbine suitability and energy production.
  • Back Cast study and energy methods update
  • Time Series energy capture
    • Accurate calculation of time-dependent losses
    • 8760 profiles uses and limitations
  • Understanding the link between suitability and energy production

Repowering 1 Year Later – Lessons Learned
2017 was the year of the first major repowerings and these are expected to continue in 2018.  With the extension and four year phase out of the PTC, many asset owners decided to repower their aging wind projects in order to requalify for 10 more years of tax credits.  Significant investments were made to projects such as replacing rotors and nacelle components while retaining towers and foundations. In this session we will evaluate these types of projects, review how investors are viewing these types of assets and discuss what was learned from the past year.
  • How is energy production forecasted from a repowered project using historic data and turbine upgrades?
  • Where are the interfaces between reused and new turbine technology and what are the key turbine technology risks?
  • How are reused towers and foundations analyzed and how do owners and investors get comfortable?
  • Where do repowering projects fit within the existing environmental, permitting and commercial contracting structures?
  • How long can we/should we extend the life of repowered projects for?
  • What were the most critical investor technical issues on the 2017 projects?
Moderator:  Jeremy Tchou, Director, Due Diligence Services, North America, AWS Truepower
  • Dylan Reeves, Sales Director, GE Renewables

M&A - How to succeed as a buyer and a seller for operating and greenfield portfolios and projects.
With a significant amount of capital in the market and capital recycling, the M&A market was strong in 2017 and we expect this to continue into 2018 as investors consolidate their portfolios, new investors enter the market and other investors monetize their assets. In this session, the panel will evaluate the technical aspects of due diligence supporting M&A from both the buy and the sell sides, and how to evaluate a large portfolio in 3 – 4 weeks.
  • What are the key technical drivers to valuation?
  • What are the key technical items to review on operating projects compared to green field projects?
  • Where are the red flags, how are costs and technical assumptions validated, and where are areas for upside or downside?
  • How to take a portfolio approach and evaluate multiple projects in a limited amount of time with a limited budget – a step by step approach for success.
  • Why are site visits so important?
  • Do’s and don’ts.

Technology Trends - Reducing costs in a competitive market
With the phase out of the PTC, impacts of tax reform and highly competitive power pricing, developers, OEM’s and operators have been reducing technical costs, increasing efficiency and extending life to ensure that wind projects get built.  The panel will explore the key technology trends behind the CAPEX and OPEX reductions and efficiency improvements we are experiencing in today’s highly competitive market and what we might expect to see in the next 2 – 3 years as we get closer to 2020.
  • With new developments in turbine technology, what turbines will be deployed in 2018 and beyond? Where are the key efficiency improvements, what are the risks and how will investors get comfortable?
  • What is driving the reduction in turbine CAPEX & OPEX costs?  How low can we go?
  • Reducing BOP CAPEX – the latest developments in turbine foundations as a key driver to BOP costs.
  • How is asset life being evaluated?  Is 30 years the new 20 years?
  • Wind and storage – what has been deployed to date and what do we expect to see?
